Demsmos Write-Up
We have been working on Desmos.com for about 2 weeks now. We have been learning about parabolas and I gain more understanding every day. Desmos allows us to learn in a fun way so we did many actvities on it.
|
The first activity we did was to predict if the ball was going into the hoop, we had to think mathematically. Whats cool about desmos is that once you submit your answers you can see what your other class is submitting as well because it makes you think more about if you're actually right.
In the second activity we played "Guess who" but with a twist... We had to guess with parabolas. We logged onto Desmos and we would randomly got partnered with someone in the class. They picked a parabola and we had to guess which one it was and we could only ask yes or no questions. At first I would just ask questions like "Is it slim?" or "Does it look like a smiley face?" but then Mr.Kirby and Mr.Anatole taught us how to use the proper language for it. So I started asking questions like "Is it acute?" or " Is it on all 4 quadrants?" and those questions helped me more. The more questions that I asked with this new vocabulary we were taught the more faster I was able identify the parabolas my partners chose.
This activity really helped me have deeper understanding of how to see where the parabolas are located.

For our third activity we had to change numbers on a graph so we could we could connect a parabola. It was hard at times because it had to be exact. Eventually I got the hang of it. Sometimes all we had to do is change the symbol of things like just either making it a negative or a positive. Sometimes just changing one number to either make the parabola go left or right. This was very confusing for me because there were times where I didnt know what number to change and I would try different things. Then later our teacher showed us the way the equations worked.
2 <--- To the second power
Y=A(X-H) +K
This helped me alot because it helped see what numbers to change and how changing that one number would affect the parabola.

For our last activity we had to make a parabola and there where stars on different parts of the graph and you had to make a parabola that could catch all the stars. If you caught all the stars you would successfully move to the next challenge. This is such a challenging game, but what I liked about it is that it kept me entertained and motivated to get all the stars.
Self Assessment-
There were some days where I would get distracted because it would seem repetitive just Desmos everyday for about a week but another part of me really liked it because it helped me stay focused and I was always trying to pass to the new "level" by challenging myself with the games.My goal for the year is to stay motivated. It is very hard for me to stay motivated when I don't get something so asking questions will help me get better. Motivation will helped me stay pumped through the year and get me excited through every challenge we face in math this year.

Problem Evaluation-
Desmos was really fun because I got to both play games but learn it in an educational way. It helped me challenge myself more. Desmos was different, in a good way.There were times where I would get frustrated because I couldn't find the right answer but it was frustration out of learning,of trying new things. Some of them didn't work but thats what lead me to other ideas on how to solve the problems.

Edits- Some feedback that I got from my peers is to be more descriptive on how I faced my challenges, how I gained understanding etc. This helped by being more thorough in explaining why I did what I did.
" Add Goals" is another piece of feedback that I got. At first I didn't know what my goals where because my goal was the same goal everyone has get straight A+'s but that didnt oush me harder enough to actually try and learn. So I came up with a new one which was "To stay motivated" and this will help me so much through the year to always listen and stay motivated.
