In this project we learned about immigration. We started off by reading articles with statistics and stories about people immigrating. Once we had enough information we had a socratic seminar and discussed it as a class and that could be very challenging because all have different opinions on it and we have to respect everyones opinions. Something we all agreed on though is that immigration is such a difficult problem to solve because theres is different ways to go at it. We then watched documentaries and movies about immigration. Most of them were based off of children on how they wanted to immigrate because of gangs threatening them, drugs, abuse, money etc.we went on with the project learning more facts then we went on a field trip to Chicano Park. A lady introduced Chicano park to us and gave us the background story of Chicano Park. She told us how many times the City of San Diego wanted to tear down the park but the Chicanos fought for it. They marched and protest and would not let them tear down the park. On that field trip we also had to take pictures with murals and try to re-create one of the murals for the next step of our project which was creating an art piece based on some questions.
Then we got our inspiration and started on rough drafts on a art piece answering one of these 5 essential questions .
1. Why do people immigrate to other countries?
2. What are the challenges they might face when entering a new country?
3. What is the difference between acculturation and assimilation?
4. What things are essential or necessary to achieve success in the US?
5. Is there an American dream? Is it for everyone?
I chose to answer number 1 after many rough drafts I answered it by drawing a brick wall with a hole in the wall and in the wall was The United States Of America Flag representing the opportunity, but the flag was dripping onto the wall representing how it was taking over. Also on the top and sides there was blood splatters and drip representing violence on the side of the brick wall. I believe people immigrate to other countries for a better life. They just want a stable life and a place they shouldn't be afraid to live in most times. A place for opportunity and education.
I think the purpose of this project was just to inform us on this problem and keep us open minded. Before this project I had no knowledge on immigration I wasn't even sure how people immigrated.
On Festival Del Sol I was really proud of my final outcome. I had spent many hours at school and at home on the piece and I was happy to show it off. The room was kind of empty but I saw a man walking around admiring the pieces so I introduced the project to him and he had several questions and I felt very prepared. That turned into and hour conversation with a stranger but I was able to share my knowledge on each and every question he had. My shift in spanish had already ended but I lost track of time discussing on why the American Dream is so popular. Festival Del Sol was exciting and I was proud of my art work.
